More interesting facts about T1 service

intersting facts about t1 lines T1 (otherwise known as DS1) service offers businesses in the United States symmetric broadband connections to the internet, or to other distinct locations, at a speed of 1.54 Mbps. The service is typically delivered over a pair of copper wires that are owned by the local phone company, or ILEC. T1 service is factored into two main pieces: loop and port. The loop is the price that the ILEC charges your internet service provider to connect to your building over their last-mile copper wires. The port is the monthly fee your ISP will charge you to connect you to the internet. Typically, commercial broadband providers will bill these two charges together and provide you one easy-to-understand bill.

The beauty of T1 lines is that they are everywhere, and can be subject to a repeater to boost signal strength in the case of rural connections. In the United States, it is possible to get T1 service just about anywhere. The real question is cost; the longer the distance (in miles) of the "loop", the higher the cost to the end-user. Some suppliers, like Nitel, offer what they call a "flat rate T1" that caps out at $400/month, regardless of the loop distance.

In the inner city and other well-connection locations, T1 service is becoming less popular. Services like Ethernet over Copper are offering customers over 10X the speed of a T1 for well under $1000, drastically reducing the equivalent price-per-meg. Also affecting the appetite for more bandwidth, particularly for speeds over 1.5 Mpbs, is the adoption of cloud-based managed services where the computing is done off-site. These remote applications require bandwidth, and lots of it, further increasing the demand for cable, fiber ethernet, and ethernet over copper connections.

But, even with these emerging trends, the economy, simplicity, and ubiquity of T1 service will ensure that the technology will hang around for a long time to come, delivering the internet life-line to small companies who need a decent connection without breaking the budget.

Things to look for when shopping for a T1
things to look for when you are in the market for a t1
Like most things in life, all T1 service is NOT the same. Some things you need to look for when shopping for a T1 line:
  • T1 Router - some providers include a router with their service, others will charge you a "rental" fee each month, while others will leave that completely up to you.
  • Router Management - some providers will manage your router for you from their Network Operations Center, watching to see if you are getting close to your saturation limit and proactively watching to see that your service is up. Others will leave the management of the router (after the initial configuration) in your hands.
  • Term Commitments - every T1 provider will ask you to commit to either a 1, 2, or 3 year contract. There are some excellent discounts (on the order of 15-20% off) for customers who sign 3-year agreements. Second, customers who sign longer commitments will almost always have the installation/set-up fees waived. If they don't, just ask and they will 99% of the time.
  • Installation - T1 service installation usually takes between 3 weeks and 2 months, depending on the efficiency of your new ISP combined with the ILEC. Both companies have to do their job right in order for you to receive service in under 60 days. Just prepare yourself.
  • Service Renewals - most T1 service providers will convert your account from a term commitment to a month-to-month at the end of your contract term. But beware, there are some of them that will auto-renew your contract for another 3 years at the same rate if you let the expiration date pass without contacting them (or your agent). Each and every 3 years, you should be able to double your speed for the same price you pay today.
