CLECs Gain Ground with SMBsFriday December 25,2009, 05:15 am ET
DIAMOND LAKE, Oregon, Dec. 25 /Michael Johnson/ -- The way business connect to the digital universe is changing. More and more enterprises are
discovering the new broadband options made available to them through a series of cost cutting
measures by telecommunication providers. With the recent rush to consolidate, more and more
features are being crammed into the current service offerings, which continue to fall in price
bringing products like integrated T1 service into the price range of the vast majority of
small to medium-size businesses.
"What we're seeing here is the Bells holding their prices steady and milking their high
margins on POTS (plain old telephone service) lines for as long as possible. With the
lower prices being offered by CLECs (Competitive Local Exchange Carriers) on dynamic
integrated T-carrier services, the Bells are scrambling to keep pace before enterprises
realize they can actually save money by upgrading to bigger and more reliable circuits."

Min Lieu owns a small insurance agency in Oregon. Five years ago he signed up with
XO Communications for a TDM-based integrated T1 line for $870/month, which did not
include local or long distance calling. Recently, he was offered XO's version of
a dynamic circuit called "XO Flex" for half of the price he was already paying.

Recent advances in technology, fostered by competition from growing CLECs, is bringing
integrated T1 services to small business everywhere. And the trend doesn't look like
it will change anytime soon. CLECs continue to grow their networks, offering more
advanced services like metro ethernet, MPLS, and more.Expect innovation to continue on its upward spiral as the CLECs continue to expand
their footprints as well as their customer bases. Barring any funny stuff from the FCC,
